For homeowners and small-project buyers
For most single-house work of two or three storeys, Portland Pozzolana Cement or Ordinary Portland Cement 43 grade is sufficient across footings, columns, slabs and plaster. OPC 53 is worth the extra cost only where the structural engineer has specified it for high-stress elements such as long-span beams or transfer slabs. For coastal sites in Mangaluru, Kochi, Kozhikode, Visakhapatnam or the Chennai belt, Portland Pozzolana Cement or Portland Slag Cement is preferred over plain OPC because both blends produce a denser, less permeable concrete that resists chloride ingress and carbonation better.
Quantities for a typical single-house project run to roughly six to seven bags of cement per cubic metre of M20 concrete, and one bag per fifteen to eighteen square feet of 12 millimetre plaster. Order only what can be used within ninety days of the manufacturing date printed on the bag, store bags on wooden pallets off the floor with the stack no more than ten high, and cover with a tarpaulin that does not touch the bags directly. Cement that has gone lumpy from moisture cannot be restored and should be rejected rather than used.
Wall putty and plaster of Paris are not interchangeable. Wall putty, whether white-cement-based such as UltraTech Wall Care and Birla White or acrylic-based such as Asian Paints TruCare, is a thin smoothing layer of one to two millimetres applied between cement plaster and paint. Plaster of Paris is a gypsum-based material used in dry interior areas for false ceilings, cornices and decorative mouldings, and is not suitable for wet walls, external surfaces or below the damp proof course.
For contractors and site engineers
Cement selection on a structural project is governed by four parameters: compressive strength class, heat of hydration, sulphate resistance and blend chemistry. The four grey cements commonly specified in Indian RCC are OPC 43 under IS 269 with a minimum twenty-eight-day compressive strength of 43 N per square millimetre, OPC 53 under IS 269 at 53 N per square millimetre, PPC under IS 1489 Part 1 with 15 to 35 percent fly ash replacement and PSC under IS 455 with 25 to 70 percent slag replacement. The table below sets out the physical parameters that matter at specification time.
| Parameter | OPC 43 | OPC 53 | PPC | PSC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3-day compressive strength, minimum (MPa) | 23 | 27 | 16 | 16 |
| 7-day compressive strength, minimum (MPa) | 33 | 37 | 22 | 22 |
| 28-day compressive strength, minimum (MPa) | 43 | 53 | 33 | 33 |
| Typical heat of hydration | Moderate | High | Low to moderate | Low |
| Typical use | General RCC, masonry, plaster, precast | High-strength RCC, precast, prestressed work | Mass concrete, foundations, durable slabs | Marine and sulphate environments, mass pours |
International equivalents, used on EPC projects where the specification references ASTM or EN cements, map approximately as follows. OPC 43 aligns with ASTM C150 Type I and EN 197-1 CEM I 42.5 N. OPC 53 aligns with CEM I 52.5 N. PPC aligns with ASTM C595 Type IP and EN 197-1 CEM II/B-P or CEM IV. PSC aligns with ASTM C595 Type IS and EN 197-1 CEM III/A or CEM III/B. Exact equivalence always requires the mill test certificate to be reviewed against the receiving specification.
Exposure and environment tolerance follows IS 456 Table 3. Mild exposure requires M20 minimum with 300 kilogrammes per cubic metre binder. Moderate exposure requires M25 at 300 kilogrammes per cubic metre. Severe exposure requires M30 at 320 kilogrammes per cubic metre with water-cement ratio capped at 0.45. Very severe and extreme exposure require M35 or M40 with PPC or PSC at water-cement ratio no higher than 0.40 and a minimum of fifty percent slag or thirty percent fly ash replacement where chloride ingress is the governing risk.
Receipt-stage quality assurance should be non-negotiable. For every consignment verify the BIS licence number and CM/L number on the bag, the manufacturing week and year, a random sampling of three bags per truck against the IS 269 weight tolerance of minus two percent on 50 kilogrammes, and visual inspection for lumps. A fresh mortar cube set of three cubes at seven days and three at twenty-eight days under IS 4031 Part 6 should be cast for every 200 tonnes received.
Governing standards referenced in this category are IS 269 for OPC, IS 1489 Part 1 for PPC, IS 455 for PSC, IS 8042 for white cement, IS 4031 series for physical test methods, IS 3812 Part 1 for fly ash, IS 16714 for GGBS, IS 4926 for ready-mix concrete and IS 456 for plain and reinforced concrete. International references are ASTM C150, ASTM C595, ASTM C618 and EN 197-1.
