For homeowners and small-project buyers
The three plumbing systems inside a typical home serve three different jobs with three different materials. Hot-and-cold water supply runs on CPVC from the overhead tank and geyser to every tap, shower and appliance. Wastewater and sewer lines run on uPVC SWR from WCs, basins and floor traps to the stack and onward to the manhole. Rainwater and terrace drainage run on uPVC or PVC in a separate stack.
CPVC is specified under ASTM F441 and IS 15778. The common sizes for residential supply are 15 millimetre nominal for fixture branches, 20 and 25 millimetre for floor mains and 32 millimetre for the main riser. Joints are made with CPVC solvent cement under ASTM F493, which chemically fuses the pipe and fitting into a single piece; the joint sets within five minutes at room temperature and reaches full pressure rating at twenty-four hours. Never substitute uPVC solvent cement for CPVC solvent cement, because the chemistry is different and the joint will fail under hot-water pressure within weeks.
uPVC SWR for waste lines comes in two types under IS 13592: Type A for ventilation pipes and rainwater, Type B for soil and waste. The common sizes are 75 millimetre for washbasin and kitchen sink drains, 110 millimetre for floor traps and WC branches, and 160 millimetre for the external stack or the manhole connection. SWR joints use rubber seal (solvent-free) or solvent cement, depending on the manufacturer system, and should never be mixed between systems.
Sanitaryware grading runs from basic ceramic through premium vitreous china. For a residential project the minimum specification is vitreous china under IS 2556 or ASME A112.19.2, with wall-mounted or floor-mounted WCs rated for ten litres per flush or less. Dual-flush WCs at six and three litres are the sustainable default. Faucets should be CP brass with ceramic-cartridge quarter-turn operation; rotational-washer faucets are obsolete and leak within eighteen months.
For contractors and site engineers
Pipe material selection on a commercial plumbing project is driven by service temperature, working pressure, water chemistry and regulatory compliance. CPVC under ASTM F441 is rated for continuous service at 82 degrees Celsius and 690 kPa; uPVC under ASTM D1785 is rated for continuous service at 60 degrees Celsius; HDPE PE100 under ISO 4427 is rated for 10 bar working pressure at 20 degrees Celsius over a 50-year design life; PPR under DIN 8077 and 8078 is rated for 80 degrees Celsius and 10 bar in the Type 3 grade. Working pressure derates substantially with temperature for all plastic systems; design calculation must use the manufacturer pressure-temperature chart rather than nominal values.
Potable water compliance under NSF/ANSI 61 certifies that the pipe, fitting and solvent cement do not leach regulated contaminants into drinking water above threshold levels; this certification is required for any system supplying human consumption water and should be verified at material receipt against the pipe and fitting batch codes.
Wall thickness for pressure applications follows the SDR designation (Standard Dimension Ratio equal to outer diameter divided by wall thickness). SDR 11 CPVC is the standard for hot-and-cold supply; SDR 13.5 is an economy variant suitable only for cold-water lines where the maximum service temperature never exceeds 50 degrees Celsius. For uPVC Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 are the two common classes; Schedule 80 is specified for pump-discharge and high-pressure lines, Schedule 40 for standard cold-water and drainage.
Jointing method varies by pipe: solvent cement for CPVC and uPVC, heat fusion for PPR and HDPE, mechanical flange for large-diameter HDPE and for transitions between material families, electrofusion for buried HDPE main lines. Testing is under hydrostatic pressure at 1.5 times the working pressure for at least two hours for residential and four hours for commercial, with pressure drop limits specified in the applicable code.
Sanitaryware specification follows ASME A112.19.2 for vitreous china WCs and lavatories, IAPMO UPC or ICC IPC for installation, and ADA / NBC accessibility codes for institutional fit-out. Flow rates for faucets are regulated: 7.6 litres per minute for kitchen and 5.7 for bathroom under WaterSense and comparable water-efficiency programmes; 1.9 litres per minute for showers in water-stressed jurisdictions.
Governing standards referenced in this category are ASTM F441 and F442 for CPVC, ASTM D1785 for uPVC, ASTM F493 for CPVC solvent cement, NSF/ANSI 61 for potable-water certification, ASME A112.19.2 for sanitaryware and IS 15778 and IS 13592 for Indian CPVC and SWR.
