Steel and rebar
The Kyathsandra yard stocks or supplies to order Fe 500, Fe 500 D and Fe 550 D TMT bars in diameters from eight through forty millimetres, annealed binding wire in 18 and 20 SWG, hot-rolled and cold-rolled pipes, mild steel angles and channels, slotted channels, bright bars and welded wire mesh. Despatch corridors from Tumakuru cover Bengaluru, Mysuru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mangaluru and Kochi on a regular rotation, with onward coverage across the wider South Indian footprint.

For homeowners and small-project buyers
Most South Indian residential designs specify Fe 500 D as the default TMT grade, with 8 millimetres for stirrups, 10 to 12 millimetres for slabs, 12 to 16 millimetres for beams and 16 to 20 millimetres for columns. The letter D denotes a ductile variant with tightened carbon, sulphur and phosphorus chemistry and a minimum elongation of 16 percent, which matters more than raw strength on houses in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala because the entire coast and large inland belts sit in seismic zones II and III. Fe 500 without the D suffix is cheaper and adequate for boundary walls and parapets, but not for the main RCC frame of a house.
At site receipt, three simple checks separate honest material from suspect material. First, every BIS-licensed TMT bar carries rolling marks embossed on the surface repeating every metre or so, showing the manufacturer identifier and the grade designation; plain or inconsistently marked bars should be refused. Second, check the bar weight per metre against IS 1786, where a 12 millimetre bar weighs 0.888 kilogrammes per metre, a 16 millimetre weighs 1.58 kilogrammes per metre and a 20 millimetre weighs 2.47 kilogrammes per metre, with a tolerance of roughly three to five percent depending on size. Third, look at the rib pattern, which should be consistent with deep transverse ribs rather than sparse or irregular ridges.
For a typical 1200 square feet ground-plus-one house in the Tumakuru or Bengaluru region, expect total rebar consumption of three to four and a half kilogrammes per square foot of built-up area. Order against a bar bending schedule rather than a lump-sum tonnage; cut-and-bend reduces waste from the usual fifteen to eighteen percent down to three to five percent. Binding wire consumption is roughly eight to ten kilogrammes per tonne of rebar.
For contractors and site engineers
TMT selection on a structurally-engineered project is driven by four parameters: yield strength, ductility, weldability and corrosion resistance. The Bureau of Indian Standards recognises three grades of interest for reinforced concrete work under IS 1786, namely Fe 500, Fe 500 D and Fe 550 D, each with tightened acceptance limits on mechanical properties and chemistry.
| Parameter | Fe 500 | Fe 500 D | Fe 550 D |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yield stress, minimum (N/mm²) | 500 | 500 | 550 |
| Ultimate tensile strength, minimum (N/mm²) | 545 | 565 | 600 |
| UTS to YS ratio, minimum | 1.08 | 1.10 | 1.08 |
| Elongation, minimum (percent) | 12 | 16 | 14.5 |
| Carbon, maximum (percent) | 0.30 | 0.25 | 0.25 |
| Sulphur plus phosphorus, maximum (percent) | 0.105 | 0.075 | 0.075 |
International equivalence under ASTM A615 and A706 is functional rather than exact. ASTM A706 is the low-alloy, weldable, ductile grade closest in intent to Fe 500 D and Fe 550 D; ASTM A615 is a plain strength designation closer to Fe 500. Projects that reference ACI 318 or ASTM specifications should review the chemistry and elongation limits at the mill test certificate level rather than relying on nominal grade mapping.
Exposure and environment tolerance follows IS 456 Table 16 on cover and Table 3 on concrete grade. Minimum clear cover is 20 millimetres for mild exposure, 30 millimetres for moderate, 45 millimetres for severe, 50 millimetres for very severe and 75 millimetres for extreme. In coastal cities such as Kochi, Mangaluru, Kozhikode, Visakhapatnam and Chennai, the combination of chloride ingress and carbonation drives specification toward corrosion-resistant rebar under IS 13620 or epoxy-coated rebar for chloride-laden structures. For any structure in seismic zones III, IV or V, IS 13920 Clause 5.2 requires reinforcement with minimum elongation of 14.5 percent and minimum UTS to YS ratio of 1.15 at cast level, which Fe 500 D and Fe 550 D can reliably provide.
Receipt-stage quality assurance should cover both documentary and physical checks. Documentary checks cover the mill test certificate with cast number traceable to the bundle tag, the BIS licence number and CM/L, and the ISI mark on the tag. Physical checks cover the diameter and mass per metre for three random bars per size per consignment against IS 1786 Table 1, a tensile test under IS 1608 and bend and rebend test under IS 1599 at an NABL lab for one sample per 50 tonnes per size, and a rib geometry visual check against the rolling pattern declared by the manufacturer.
Governing standards referenced in this category are IS 1786 for TMT bars, IS 13920 for seismic detailing, IS 456 for plain and reinforced concrete, IS 1608 for tensile test, IS 1599 for bend test, IS 16172 for mechanical couplers, IS 2062 for structural steel and IS 1566 for welded wire mesh. International references are ASTM A615, ASTM A706, ACI 318 and AWS D1.4 for rebar welding.
