Tiles and stone
The Kyathsandra yard stocks or supplies to order glazed vitrified tiles, double-charge and full-body vitrified, ceramic wall tiles, outdoor pavers, porcelain large-format slabs and engineered stone. Principal floor tile sizes run from 600 by 600 millimetres through 800 by 1600 millimetres, with wall tile sizes from 300 by 450 millimetres through 600 by 1200 millimetres. Despatch corridors from Tumakuru cover Bengaluru, Mysuru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Coimbatore and Kochi on a regular rotation.

For homeowners and small-project buyers
The first decision is water absorption. Under ISO 13006, tiles are classified into five groups based on water absorption percentage: group BIa below 0.5 percent covers vitrified and porcelain tiles, group BIb between 0.5 and 3 percent covers semi-vitrified, group BIIa between 3 and 6 percent, BIIb between 6 and 10 percent covers standard ceramic, and BIII above 10 percent covers wall tiles with high absorption glazed body. For floor use in Indian residential and commercial settings, BIa vitrified tiles are the default; BIII wall tiles are confined to vertical surfaces where they cannot be loaded or walked on.
The second decision is surface finish. Polished glazed vitrified tiles are the glossy mirror-finish default for living rooms and master bedrooms, but they are slip-prone when wet and unsuitable for bathrooms, balconies or kitchen floors. Matte and semi-polished finishes with a dynamic coefficient of friction at or above 0.42 under ANSI A326.3 are the correct specification for wet areas, as are structured or textured pavers for outdoor use. Double-charge and full-body tiles carry the colour and pattern through the tile body and tolerate surface wear and cutting better than single-fired glazed tiles.
The third decision is tile size. Larger formats such as 800 by 1600 millimetres and 1200 by 1800 millimetres carry a substantial design premium but demand a flatter substrate, a more deformable C2TE S1 adhesive under EN 12004, wider joints of at least three millimetres and a skilled layer. Handling loss on large formats is higher than on standard 600 by 600 tiles; a prudent site allowance is ten to twelve percent above the clean measured area rather than the five to seven percent used for smaller sizes.
For shade consistency, specify a single batch number for the entire project and verify that all cartons at site carry the same shade code and calibre, both printed on the carton side. Mixing batches, even from the same manufacturer, produces visible shade banding that cannot be corrected after laying. Retain at least five percent extra tile from the installation batch for future replacements.
For contractors and site engineers
Tile specification on a commercial or institutional project is governed by five parameters: water absorption group, breaking strength, surface wear class, slip resistance and dimensional calibration. Under ISO 10545-3 water absorption, ISO 10545-4 breaking strength, ISO 10545-7 wear resistance for glazed tiles, ISO 10545-6 abrasion resistance for unglazed tiles, and ANSI A326.3 slip resistance, each parameter is tested at the manufacturer and reported on the product technical data sheet.
The wear classification under ISO 10545-7 uses PEI ratings from Class 0 through Class 5. Residential bathrooms and bedrooms accept Class 1 and 2; residential living rooms and offices need Class 3; commercial interiors including hotel lobbies, restaurants and retail need Class 4; heavy commercial and airport-grade need Class 5. Specifying a Class 2 tile for a hotel lobby is a predictable failure within eighteen months.
Breaking strength under ISO 10545-4 should exceed 1300 N for wall tiles and 700 N per unit thickness for floor tiles intended for residential use, with 1500 N for commercial use. Water absorption for BIa tiles must be verified below 0.5 percent to reject tiles that have been falsely labelled vitrified. Surface hardness on the Mohs scale for unglazed bodies should be at least 6 for commercial floor use.
Dimensional calibration matters for large-format tiles. Rectified edges, where the tile has been ground to a precise dimension after firing, allow joint widths as low as 1.5 millimetres but require a perfectly flat substrate; non-rectified tiles need joint widths of 3 millimetres or more to absorb size variation. Substrate flatness under the TCNA Handbook must be within 6 millimetres over 3 metres before the adhesive is applied, measured with a straight edge.
Adhesive selection follows the tile body and the substrate. For vitrified and porcelain tiles on a cementitious substrate, a C2TE adhesive under EN 12004 with minimum 1 N per square millimetre bond strength, slip resistance and extended open time is the standard specification, with S1 deformability for tiles larger than 600 by 600. For large-format slabs above 1200 millimetres on any dimension, a C2TE S2 adhesive is required, and the back of the tile must be buttered in addition to the floated adhesive on the substrate for full transfer.
Governing standards referenced in this category are ISO 13006 for ceramic tile classification, ISO 10545 series for test methods, ANSI A137.1 for American ceramic tile specification, ANSI A326.3 for DCOF slip resistance, EN 14411 for European tile classification and the TCNA Handbook for installation details. Indian equivalents are under IS 15622 for ceramic tile and IS 15658 for precast concrete blocks and paver tiles.
