For homeowners and small-project buyers
Tile adhesive selection reduces to two decisions: the class matched to the tile and substrate, and the format matched to the tile size. The class is specified under EN 12004 by the letter C for cementitious, a number 1 or 2 for bond strength, and suffixes T for vertical slip resistance, E for extended open time, and S1 or S2 for deformability. C1 is economy adhesive for ceramic wall tiles on residential walls. C2TE is the general-purpose adhesive for vitrified floor and wall tiles. C2TE S1 is specified for tiles larger than 600 by 600 millimetres. C2TE S2 is specified for porcelain slabs larger than 1200 millimetres on any dimension, for heated floors and for substrates with thermal movement.
Coverage for standard 600 by 600 vitrified floor tiles with a 10-millimetre notched trowel runs about 4 kilogrammes per square metre of adhesive; for 800 by 1600 slabs with a 12-millimetre notched trowel and back-buttering, coverage rises to 6 kilogrammes per square metre. Mixing is always water into powder (not powder into water), with a slow-speed drill and paddle mixer for three to five minutes, followed by a five-minute slake and a brief re-mix before use. Working open time after trowelling onto the substrate is typically twenty to thirty minutes for a C2 adhesive; adhesive that has begun to skin over must be discarded rather than re-wetted.
Grout selection follows joint width and exposure. For joints below 3 millimetres use a fine-particle cementitious grout class CG2 under EN 13888. For joints from 3 to 15 millimetres use a standard CG2 sanded grout. For wet areas, external joints and chemical-exposed joints such as restaurant kitchen floors use an epoxy grout class RG under EN 13888; epoxy grout does not stain, does not absorb moisture and resists chemical cleaning. Grouting should begin at least twenty-four hours after tile laying and the first fill should be followed by a second pass after the grout has begun to firm.
Construction sealants fill movement joints, kitchen counter junctions, window perimeter seams and expansion gaps. Silicone sealants are weather-resistant and paintable only with silicone-compatible paints; acetoxy silicones release acetic acid during cure and should be avoided on metal and marble substrates. Neutral-cure silicones are the correct default for bath and kitchen use. Polyurethane sealants bond better to cementitious substrates and accept direct painting with conventional paints, and are preferred for external facade movement joints.
For contractors and site engineers
Tile adhesive specification on a commercial project is governed by the tile body, the tile size, the substrate and the service environment. EN 12004 classifies adhesives by composition (C cementitious, D dispersion, R reaction-resin), by bond strength class (1 for minimum 0.5 N/mm2, 2 for minimum 1.0 N/mm2), and by optional characteristics (T slip resistance, E extended open time, F fast setting, S1 deformable, S2 highly deformable).
Class selection runs to a short set of rules. For ceramic wall tiles on residential walls, a C1 or C1T adhesive is adequate. For vitrified floor tiles up to 600 by 600 millimetres on cementitious substrates, a C2TE adhesive is the default. For tiles up to 900 millimetres on any dimension, C2TE S1 is specified. For tiles above 900 millimetres, under heated-floor systems, over anhydrite screeds, or on deformable substrates such as plywood and fibre-cement, C2TE S2 is required. Over waterproofing membranes under EN 14891, only the adhesives endorsed in the manufacturer system data sheet should be used.
Grout specification under EN 13888 uses CG1 for standard cementitious grouts, CG2 for improved cementitious grouts with higher abrasion resistance and reduced water absorption, and RG for reaction-resin (epoxy) grouts. CG1 is confined to interior wall applications with no water exposure. CG2 is the default for residential and commercial floor and wall tiles. RG is mandatory for industrial kitchens, laboratories, chemical plants and any setting with aggressive cleaning, and is specified for swimming pools over and above a tile-bonded waterproofing membrane.
Concrete admixtures under IS 9103 and ASTM C494 span six categories: Type A water-reducers, Type B retarders, Type C accelerators, Type D water-reducer plus retarder, Type E water-reducer plus accelerator, Type F high-range water-reducers (superplasticisers), Type G high-range water-reducers plus retarders. The chemistry has evolved from lignosulphonates (Type A) through sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde (Type F) to polycarboxylate ethers (Type F with higher efficiency and longer slump retention); PCE is the current default for ready-mix concrete and high-performance designs.
Structural adhesive anchoring under ASTM E488 and ASTM E1512 uses epoxy or vinyl-ester resin injected into a drilled and cleaned hole, with a threaded rod embedded to the manufacturer-specified depth. Load capacity is certified by the manufacturer under the ESR (Evaluation Service Report) system; the ESR report carries the characteristic bond strength, edge-distance and spacing requirements and the service-temperature range.
Governing standards referenced in this category are EN 12004 for tile adhesive classification, EN 13888 for grouts, IS 15477 for Indian tile adhesive, ASTM C881 for epoxy bonding systems, IS 9103 and ASTM C494 for concrete admixtures, and ISO 11600 for construction sealants.
